VIETNAM FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

The global food processing industry is worth more than 2,000 billion USD with more than 400,000 businesses. According to the European Food and Drugs Industry report, the top three sale sectors in the global food processing industry included the EU which accounting for 44%, the US with 20% and China recorded at 19%.

In 2018, Vietnam's dry seafood production increased by 17% while canned seafood production was estimated to increase slightly by 7.3% compared to 2017 due to the increase of demand in some export markets. In 2018, imports of processed and preserved seafood products increased by 17.7% compared to 2017.

The output of canned meat in 2018 increased by 6.3% compared to 2017. The meat consumption value reached 3.135.5 billion, in which sausage was still the product with the largest proportion in the production structure. Exports of processed meat products in 2018 were estimated to increase strongly by 48% compared to the same period in 2017,in which Japan was Vietnam's main export market.

The production of canned vegetables and fruits increased by 11.3% compared to 2017 due to the completion and operation of a number of vegetable processing factories. Generally in 2018, exports of processed vegetables and fruits were estimated to rise 8.9% over the same period in 2017

The consumption value of starch and starch products in 2018 was estimated to decrease by 6% compared to 2017 due to the increasing demand for food product groups as well as the higher income of the people and the trend of using high quality and safe products.

For other products such as confectionery, processed food, noodles and sugar, production and consumption increased in 2018 compared to the same period in 2017, in which the sugar group still faced the most difficulties, sugar inventories in factories increased highly while sugar smuggling to Vietnam was more complicated and sophisticated.
