This study was compiled by STOCHASIS Management Consultancy S.A. and aims to reflect the current state of the market of the primary production of basic fruits and vegetables for processing in Greece, particularly of industrial tomato, clingstone peach and juiced orange and to examine its prospects, while presenting information on the international market.

More specifically, the first five chapters of the study feature information on the primary production of basic fruits and vegetables for processing, which refer to general characteristics, the institutional framework, the demand, the offer and the size of the industry in terms of value and quantity. In the next chapter, the study presents data on the manufacturing enterprises, which constitute the sector's customers, including the development of their sales, data on their products' external trade and their financial situation. The next chapter presents the valuation of the manufacturing enterprises. Finally, the study feature information on the global market, the conclusions and the prospects of the market, as well as an annex with selected financial indicators of major enterprises for 2009-2013.

The fruits and vegetables primary production sector is characterised by the following basic features:
  • connection of producers and cultivating areas with Common Agricultural Policy
  • high dependence on processing companies, which absorb the production and have high bargaining power
  • dependence on weather conditions
  • year-to-year variations.
It should be mentioned that the producers of industrial tomato, clingstone peach and juiced orange, based on the applications for reinforcement (OPEKEPE), are 1.658, 10.733 and 8.242 accordingly, while the manufacturing enterprises of industrial tomato are 10-15, of clingstone peach 20-25 and of juiced orange 25-30.
