Rapid urbanization in the country along with the rising incomes particularly across the middle class has ensured the growth of the food retail industry across Mexico. Though the industry went into a decline following the economic recession of 2008-2009, the market bounced back after 2012 and has been posting good growth since then. The same growth pattern is expected to continue in the coming years as well as the industry is expected to reach a value of over USD 250 billion by the end of 2020.

With the introduction of a new tax on fatty and high calorie foods and beverages, the Mexican food retail industry is no doubt headed towards the growth of the organic food segment as well as the health food sector.
