The biggest categories within vegetables experienced decline in consumption in 2014. Maize consumption declined by 1% to 1.9 million tonnes. Production of maize decreased 2.7%, while the continued demand for corn by the growing cattle herds in Brazil increased 5%. As a result, the supply of maize for consumers was reduced, impacting sales performance. Within tomatoes, the decrease in production was also a major issue affecting consumption, which fell by 2% in 2014.
