Since 1992, China has been the largest country of meat output of the world, and the meat consumption of per capita family of urban residents has been increased to about 40kg. However, due to the limit of domestic producing technique of meat and consumption ability, the output and consumption of meat products processed in China are still in a low level. Based on the statistic of the State Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture, meat goods output of China only accounts for 11% of total meat output presently, which is far behind 50% of developed countries at the same period.

China’s meat processing industry has a huge scope, and there are various middle and small enterprises, which are dispersed. From January to November in 2007, the meat goods and byproduct processing industry (including meat canning) of China has 1,271 large-scaled enterprises, with a total sales income of about RMB 152.110 billion Yuan. But along with the development of the industry, China’s meat processing industry has entered into a turning period of structure adjustment and resource conformity, and the competition pattern in which Shuanghui Enterprise Group Co., Ltd, Linyin Xincheng Jinluo Meat Products Co., Ltd, Delisi Group Co., Ltd and Nanjing Yurun Food Group Ltd are the leaders has been formed.

China carries out strict inspection and quarantine access system for imported processes meat products, and only countries which have signed related bilateral agreement of imported meat with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China are allowed to export processed meat products to China. In addition, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China implements registration system for the processing enterprises which export meat products to China and the meat products produced by foreign processing enterprises which are not registered shall not export meat products to China.

In 2007, the apparent consumption amount of processed meat products in China is about 8.5 million tons, and the imported products account for 0.01% of the market capability accounted by 1,033.48 tons which is the total imported processed meat products of that year, so the market proportion is extremely small. Due to the limit of food quality and safety as well as the deep processing technique level, China’s export of processes meat products has a limited amount, and the situation of China with huge population also leads to the fact that the domestic meat products are mainly for meeting the demand of the domestic market. Besides, the Chinese government carries out strict supervision system for the imported processed meat products, which affects the increase speed of imported processed meat products to some extent.

The meat industry has long term, low risk and client group with a huger scope, which are predominant over that of other industries. China’s meat processing industry will enter a new stable growing period; the market capability will keep stable increase to small amplitude; and the consumption amount will be greatly increased. It is predicted that by 2010, the apparent consumption of China’s processed meat products will achieve about 9.8-11 million tons, and the compound annual growth rate will be kept at around 5%-9%.
