The meat industry in Brazil was greatly affected in 2009 by the international financial crisis, which reduced demand for Brazilian meat exports. According to the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporters (Associação Brasileira da Indústria Exportadora de Carne – Abiec), exports of meat fell by 25% in value terms, to US$3.7 billion, and by 12% in volume terms, as a result of the higher exchange rate and stricter import restrictions for meat into the EU.
