Cheese performed quite poorly in Italy in 2017, declining by 1% in retail volume and 2% in retail value to reach 551,000 tonnes and EUR5.9 billion. Nevertheless there were a few signs of recovery in some categories, mostly thanks to the performance of specialities, for example regional products which enjoy certification of provenance and origin and are perceived to be of higher quality.
