Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. provides electricity to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. The Company has the exclusive right to generate, distribute, transmit and supply electricity on Grand Cayman pursuant to the License agreements with Government of the Cayman Islands. The companys system comprises 18 generating units with a combined capacity of 123 megawatts, 8 transformer substations. The company has an installed capacity of 123 megawatts, and provides electricity supply to approximately 20,000 customers.
The company relies upon diesel generation to produce electricity for Grand Cayman. The companys generating plant is located on the outskirts of George Town.
CUC's power system comprises 18 generating units, of which 16 diesel, one gas turbine and one steam turbine, with a combined capacity of 115 megaWatts. It has generation strategic alliance agreement with MAN B&W Diesel AG of Germany and a -year substation strategic alliance agreement with ABB Power T&D, Inc. of the United States.
Transmission and Distribution (T&D) System
The companys system comprises 8 major transformer substations, approximately 295 miles of overhead high-voltage (69 kilovolt and 13 kilovolt) transmission and distribution lines and 14 miles of high-voltage submarine cable in Grand Cayman. Transmission and distribution (T&D) lines and substations are designed for high winds and flooding that might result from a hurricane.
The companys other new T&D projects include: the installation of two overhead 24-fibre fibreoptic lines from CUCs North Sound Plant to its existing West Bay and Bodden Town substations; the installation of two 69KV submarine cables across the North Sound as part of CUCs plans to build a looped transmission system; the construction of new 69KV gas-insulated substations (GIS) in South Sound, Frank Sound, East End, Seven Mile Beach and George Town; and the construction of a 69KV transmission circuit from Bodden Town to Frank Sound, a 13 KV underbuild circuit and a fibreoptic circuit.
The companys principal market for supply of electricity comprised 3,312 commercial and 17,815 residential customers in 2004.
In May 2009, Caribbean Utilities Co. Ltd. has completed the installation of the final 9,500 pound concrete pole for the Company's 69 kiloVolt (kV) eastern transmission and distribution (T&D) loop (Eastern Loop).
