Advocat Inc. provides long-term care services to nursing home patients in eight states, primarily in the Southeast and Southwest United States.

Nursing Centers and Services

The company provides a range of long-term care services to the elderly, including skilled nursing, ancillary health care services and assisted living. In addition to the nursing and social services usually provided in long-term care centers, the company offers various rehabilitative, nutritional, respiratory, and other specialized ancillary services. As of December 31, 2009, the company operated 50 nursing centers containing 5,784 licensed nursing beds and 14 assisted living units. Its nursing centers range in size from 48 to 320 licensed nursing beds.

The company’s nursing centers provide skilled nursing health care services, including room and board, nutrition services, recreational therapy, social services and housekeeping and laundry services. Its nursing centers dispense medications prescribed by the patients’ physicians, and a plan of care is developed by professional nursing staff for each resident. The company also provides for the delivery of ancillary medical services at the nursing centers it operates. These specialty services include rehabilitation therapy services, such as audiology, speech, occupational and physical therapies, which are provided through licensed therapists and registered nurses, and the provision of medical supplies, nutritional support, infusion therapies and related clinical services. The company’s other specialty care services include:

Life Steps Unit. The company’s 18 nursing centers have units designated as Life Steps Units, its designation for patients requiring short term rehabilitation following an incident, such as a stroke or bone fracture. These units specialize in short term rehabilitation with the goal of returning the patient to their previous level of functionality. These units provide services with emphasis on upgraded amenities, including electric beds, televisions, phones at bedside, and feature a separate entrance for guests and visitors. Specialized therapeutic treatment regimens include orthopedic rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation and complex medical rehabilitation.

Lighthouse Unit: The company’s 21 nursing centers have Lighthouse Units, its designation for advanced care for dementia related disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease. The units would provide a supportive environment for cognitively impaired patients, utilizing an interdisciplinary team approach.

Enhanced Therapy Services: The company has complimented its traditional therapy services with programs that provide electrotherapy, ultrasound and shortwave diathermy therapy treatments that promote pain management, wound healing, continence improvement and contractures management, improving results of therapy treatments for its patients. It offers these treatment programs in 42 of its facilities.

Other Specialty Programming: The company implements other specialty programming based on a center’s specific needs. It has developed one adult day care center on the campus of a nursing center. The company has developed specialty programming for bariatric patients (generally, patients weighing approximately 350 pounds). These individuals have psychosocial and equipment needs.
