Coal's Global Power Generation Dominance & The Growing Importance Of Natural Gas
Executive Summary
The mission of this research paper is to explain why coal continues to dominate global power generation. The research paper will also explain the growing importance of natural gas. Information for this research paper was obtained from over 50 sources. Sources for this research paper include: several annual reports, company press releases, the World Coal Association, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and articles from Bloomberg and Reuters. Nine pages of the research paper will explain global coal dynamics. Included in this section will be a discussion about the major global producers of coal, and some of the major coal transactions which have transpired over the last several years. In addition, the major coal consuming nations will be discussed which include: China, India, the United States, and Japan. Six pages of the research paper will be dedicated to explaining how natural gas is becoming a more prominent hydrocarbon, globally. Within the natural gas section, there will be a discussion about the United States natural gas market, and several of the recent LNG supply contracts, which Cheniere Energy, has recently been awarded. There will also be a discussion about several countries which supply liquefied natural gas (LNG), and some of the major Australian LNG projects, which are being developed. Other topics that will be discussed in the research paper include: coal’s impact upon the environment, and the major global power producers who have agreed to purchase large LNG supplies. The research paper will also include a description of three of the major U.S. coal producers which include: Peabody Energy, Arch Coal, & Alpha Natural Resources. The conclusion will be three pages which will include several of my observations.
