Electricity supply in the first quarter of 2022 increased by 7.8% svck 2021
Although the power supply in Q1 increased, it is likely that a shortage of electricity will occur in the next quarter when electricity demand increases sharply, meeting the requirements from the post-Covid production resumption.
Power supply depended on hydroelectricity
In Q1, coal-fired power plants faced many difficulties (down 4.6% svck 2021) when domestic and world coal prices increased, domestic coal supply was affected when the Covid-19 epidemic broke out strongly.
Instead, hydropower was concentratedly mobilized (+18.9% svck 2021) thanks to good water storage, especially hydroelectricity from the Central region to the South.
Renewable energy continued to be expected
In Q1, mobilizing electricity supply from renewable energy increased sharply, (+23% svck 2021). From the end of 2021, Trung Nam's Eo Nam wind power project was put into operation with a total COD capacity of up to 399.6 MW (the largest wind power project in the country).
Forecast of power supply in Q2
Hydroelectricity: A weaker La Nina trend is expected to benefit southern hydropower plants, pushing rainy areas into the Central and South Central regions later. However, the number of hydroelectric power plants in the North and Central regions will decline, affecting the structure of electricity mobilization in the second half of 2022.
Thermal power: When hydropower supply is limited, thermal power is expected to be used more. However, with the current rise in coal and gas prices, the cost of producing electricity is expected to increase; electricity prices in the competitive market may increase in the second quarter.
