Performance Apparel Markets: Business Update, 3rd Quarter 2010
The global workwear market is forecast to be worth US$29 bn in value by 2015. Growth will be driven by a revival in several end use sectors, including construction, health care and hospitality.
TaylorMade-adidas Golf has become the world’s biggest golf company with sales reaching US$308 mn in the first half of 2010, while Aquascutum has agreed to develop its first golf wear collection in collaboration with TPD Luxury Solutions. Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing and Exquisite Apparel have signed a licensing agreement relating to Dickies branded performance apparel, and NanoHorizons has entered into an agreement with J2LFA relating to the distribution of SmartSilver treated yarns and fabrics in South Korea.
In another development, LaCrosse Footwear has received an order worth US$8.6 mn for its Danner Combat Hiker boot from the US Army. Furthermore, the company has opened a new facility in Portland, Oregon, USA, for the production of Danner footwear.
In other news, Asics America has acquired Agence Quebec Plus while its parent company Asics has entered into an agreement to buy Hagl?fs. Billabong International has completed the acquisition of West 49, and has entered into two separate agreements to acquire RVCA and Rush Surf. In more acquisition news, Columbia Sportswear has signed an agreement to purchase OutDry Technologies, and P2i has acquired 100% of the shares in Surface Innovations.
Several companies have reported increases in their quarterly results, including Adidas (up by 19%), Columbia Sportswear (up by 24%), Perry Ellis International (up by 2%), Puma (up by 3%), Timberland (up by 5%), Under Armour (up by 25%), Unifi (up by 27%) and VF Corporation (up by 7%). Among those which recorded falls were Nike (down by 8%) and Quiksilver (down by 12%).
In other developments, Unifi is planning to invest in a new recycling facility for the production of polyester chips. The chips will be used in the manufacture of Repreve polyester fibres and yarns.
Hagl?fs has opened its first ever branded retail store, in Sweden. Intersport has opened its first store in Saudi Arabia, and Patagonia has opened its second store in Hawaii. In the field of online retailing, Adidas has opened its first online Adidas retail store for Chinese consumers on Taobao’s retail website. In the USA, Mizuno USA has opened an online store dedicated to the sale of running products to US consumers. Mountain Hardwear has also opened an online store for US consumers.
