NextEra Energy, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electric energy.
The company operates through two subsidiaries, including Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and NextEra Energy Resources, LLC.
FPL supplies electric service to a population of approximately 8.7 million throughout most of the east and lower west coasts of Florida. During 2009, FPL served approximately 4.5 million customer accounts in Florida. As of December 31, 2009, FPL's resources for serving load consisted of 26,682 mw, of which 24,530 mw were from FPL-owned facilities and 2,152 mw were available through purchased power contracts.
Fossil Operations: FPL owns and operates 81 units that use fossil fuels, such as natural gas and/or oil, and has a joint-ownership interest in three coal units.
Nuclear Operations: FPL owns, or has undivided interests in, and operates four nuclear units, two at Turkey Point and two at St. Lucie, with a total net generating capability of 2,939 mw.
Solar Operations: In 2009, FPL placed into service its utility-scale solar generating facility, a 25 mw photovoltaic (PV) facility in DeSoto County, Florida. FPL is in the process of constructing a 75 mw solar thermal facility in Martin County, Florida and a 10 mw solar PV facility in Brevard County, Florida.
NextEra Energy Resources Operations
Through its subsidiaries, NextEra Energy Resources, owns, develops, constructs, manages, and operates primarily domestic electric-generating facilities in wholesale energy markets. NextEra Energy Resources also provides full energy and capacity requirements services primarily to distribution utilities in certain markets and owns a retail electric provider based in Texas. NextEra Energy Resources also engages in power and gas marketing and trading activities. NextEra Energy Resources had ownership interests in operating independent power projects with a net generating capability totaling 18,148 mw. The company generates renewable energy from the wind and sun. It operates nuclear power generation fleet.
Wind Assets: As of December 31, 2009, NextEra Energy Resources had ownership interests in wind plants with a combined capacity of approximately 7,544 mw (net ownership).
Contracted Assets: As of December 31, 2009, NextEra Energy Resources had 3,533 mw of non-wind contracted assets.

FPL FiberNet's primary business focus is the Florida metropolitan (metro) market. As of December 31, 2009, FPL FiberNet's network consisted of approximately 2,950 route miles, which interconnect major cities throughout Florida.
