26 Nov 2010 • by Natalie Aster
Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) is planning to set up a plant to produce nearly 300,000t of polyethylene used for packaging such as foils, trays and plastic bags.
Qapco has awarded German firm Uhde a $549m engineering, procurement and construction contract for the low density polyethylene (LDPE-3) plant at Mesaieed.
The company expects the new facility to be operational within two to three years.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Industry, Qatar’s annual polyethylene output will exceed 1.2 million tonnes with the start up of Qapco-3.
Qapco plans to export the product to about 4,500 direct customers in 85 countries.
The LDPE-3 project will use the high pressure tubular reactor technology from Lyondell Basell in Germany.
