Borealis: HDPE Production Facility in Beringen to be Closed
08 Oct 2009 • by Natalie Aster
Europe’s second largest polyolefin producer Borealis (Vienna / Austria; www.borealisgroup.com) is planning to close its 220,000 t/y HDPE line in Beringen / Belgium. A company spokesperson confirmed that Borealis is in negotiations with the Belgian trade unions. The shutdown will affect 109 of the site’s roughly 430 jobs.
Because negotiations are ongoing, the company declined to comment on the planned shutdown date or on market rumours that the facility will be taken out of service in 2010. In addition to the HDPE facility, Borealis operates two PP lines and a compounding plant with total capacity of 365,000 t/y in Beringen.
