Colombia Telecommunications Industry Has High Growth Potential, Says BuddeComm in Its New Topical Report Now Available at MarketPublishers.com

LONDON – At present, the telecom infrastructure in Colombia is reasonable well-developed, however service availability is still relatively poor in small urban centres and across rural areas. The government has introduced a range of programs to tackle this problem, for instance, it has facilitated the entry of new operators to the domestic mobile market in order to improve competition and expand the availability of mobile broadband services across the country.

Today, there are around two dozens of local telephony providers in Colombia, many of them had started as a private company, but later became a public company owned by their respective municipalities. The number of lines in service in the country continues to decline steadily, with customers shifting to mobile voice services instead of traditional phones. As in many other countries of the Latin American region, most of the existing fixed telephone lines are concentrated in large cities, whilst the rest of the population remain under-serviced.

The broadband penetration in Colombia is relatively high as for the region, despite the fact that growth in the sector has been restrained by poor fixed-line infrastructure. The country’s government has launched the National ICT Plan 2008-2019, that is likely to encourage the usage of ICTs and Internet services in the country.

Uptake in the Colombian mobile market has slowed in the past several years; though it still has a promising potential, especially in the mobile broadband segment where penetration is still rather low, but demand is very high.
