LONDON – The number of mobile subscribers in the Asian telecom market reached a total of 4 billion by 2016-end. This mobile telecom sector keeps on recording a moderate rate of growth; still, in the more developed markets, there is a shift in focus from subscriber numbers towards the expansion of next-generation platforms and excessive data usage propelled by VAS services and increased ARPUs.
With respect to overall mobile penetration, Macau is the major country in the region, boasting a penetration rate of 326% as of 2016. Hong Kong comes second with mobile penetration of 227% in the same year. Maldives is the 3rd biggest market in regard to mobile penetration with penetration amounting to 220% followed by Kazakhstan with 180% and Singapore with 149% in 2016.
Mobile broadband subscriptions are gaining rapid growth. Whilst mobile and fixed will always exist on a parallel track, there is no question that with an intermittent fixed network and a superior mobile network, mobile will provide tough competition to fixed-line network.
Nevertheless, the inward nature for the success of mobile broadband is that the network is likely to increasingly rely on fibre. The majority of mobile stations will eventually have to be connected to fibre optic networks to manage the volume of traffic.
