LONDON – In accord with the revised drafts of China’s mandatory fuel consumption standards – ‘Fuel consumption limits for passenger cars’ (GB 19578) and ‘Fuel consumption evaluation methods and indicators for passenger cars’ (GB 27999), the average fuel consumption of novel passenger cars of domestic manufacture is set to fall to 5 L/100km by 2020, as measured over the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), from an estimated fleet average of 6.9L/100km as of 2015.

Globally, the EU's emission target for 2020 is 3.8L / 100km, whilst the USA and Japan target 5L / 100km. The EU is under tremendous pressure to conserve energy and reduce emissions, therefore opting for hybrid technology.

As of 2015, the volume of EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) globally skyrocketed just under 67.5% YoY to reach 549,000, specifically owing to the dramatic growth of China’s EV sector.

In the years to come, Europe is projected to engage in aggressive promotion of 48V system and 12V start/stop system. Furthermore, EVs, HEVs and PHEVs are poised to see moderate growth in the European region. Japan will likely stick to HEV and fuel cell technologies, with the sales volume of EV and PHEV remaining at low levels.
