Georgia Defense Sector Examined & Forecast in Topical SDI Report Published at

06 Sep 2013 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – The Georgian defense industry is undeveloped and almost completely import dependent. Georgia received defense equipment from the USA prior to August 2008 when Russia proposed an arms embargo on the country. During 2002-2006, the weapons purchased from the USA through direct sales were worth about USD 78 million and those received through foreign military sales were valued at over USD 82 million. Today, the key suppliers of arms and defense equipment to Georgia include Ukraine, Turkey, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland and Israel.

During the forecast period, provided the arms embargo is not approved by the UN, Ukraine is expected to remain the largest arms exporter to Georgia. NATO membership, threats posed by Russia and terrorism, and modernization plans will continue to drive the Georgian defense industry.
