15 May 2013 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – Thailand’s defense spending grew at 5.14% CAGR during 2009-2013 to a value of just over USD 6bn in 2013. Starting from 2014 to 2018, the nation’s defense budget is set to grow at about 7.2% CAGR, to approach a value of USD 8.7bn by end-2018. The need for the armed forces’ modernisation, the rush of armaments with other Asian nations, and the border security concerns will enable the Thai MoD to procure a huge amount of military equipment over the foreseeable future.

From 2008 to 2012, aircraft accounted for the majority of Thailand's total defense imports; with armored vehicles, missiles, and ships coming after with 19.1%, 15.2%, and 11.5% shares, respectively. From 2013 through 2017, the country is expected to import armored vehicles, helicopters, and frigates to counter southern insurgent activity and fortify its navy.
