EU Concrete and Mortars Demand fell 18% in 2010 Because of Construction Industry Decline According to BAC Report Recently Published by MarketPublishe

07 Oct 2011 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – In 2010 European Union demand for concrete and mortars decreased by 18% and amounted 679.6 million tons. It makes clear that European construction industry is still in decline. Only in 2011 a sluggish recovery is forecasted.

The tendency of concrete and mortars demand drop in EU is observed since 2008 considering the fall in construction industry. Within recent 3 years concrete and mortars demand fell almost 40%.

European Union remains fully self-sufficient in concrete and mortars. Import share in consumption accounts only for a tiny 0.01% share. Therefore production volume fully corresponds to consumption dynamics. After the sharp falls in 2008 and 2009, in 2010 the EU production also decreased by 12% and totaled 680.3 tons.

In the structure of EU concrete and mortars output by product, ready-mixed concrete share is constantly rising. In 2010 it amounted 93.39%. Italy and France play the major role in EU ready-mixed concrete production. Together they manufacture 40% of the EU output.

In the sector of factory made mortars, Germany is the main producer with 23.5% share.
