EU Demand for Acrylic Acid Increased 33% in 2010 and Forecasted to Grow 4.5% According to BAC Report Recently Published by MarketPublishers.com12 Aug 2011 • by Natalie Aster
LONDON – In 2010 European Union demand for acrylic acid increased 33% and exceeded the 2007 pre-crisis level. In 2010 EU market size achieved 840,000 tons. The demand is forecasted to grow 4.5% annually. The main growth driver is the expanding use in superabsorbent polymers production. Currently production of SAPs totals 32% in bulk acrylic acid consumption.
EU is self-sufficient in acrylic acid. The import supplies cover a tiny 1.5% share. The product is delivered from Indonesia, Japan and China.
Germany is ranked 1st in Europe and 3rd globally (after US and China) by acrylic acid capacity. Germany obtains 615,000 tons/y and produces 60% of European acrylic acid. The country represents the biggest consumer market for acrylic acid within EU, as well.
German producers of acrylic acid include BASF, Dow Chemical and StoHaas Monomer. French Arkema and Belgian BASF Antverpen also have stable position on the market and produce 25% and 12% respectively.
