Motion compensated gangways for offshore wind are vessel mounted personnel transfer systems installed on offshore wind maintenance vessels, service operation vessels, commissioning support vessels and offshore support vessels. They are mainly used to enable safe access between a vessel and offshore wind turbines, offshore substations or other offshore structures under waves, vessel heave, roll, pitch and relative motion. The product is typically composed of a telescopic gangway, slewing mechanism, luffing mechanism, lifting tower, hydraulic or electric drive system, motion sensors, control system, landing interface and safety interlock system. Core technologies include active motion compensation, passive motion compensation, three dimensional compensation, six degree of freedom motion control, automatic landing, dynamic positioning interface and redundant safety control. Key specifications usually include gangway length, personnel carrying capacity, light cargo transfer capacity, compensation range, allowable sea state, response speed, drive type, classification approval level and system availability. The product is mainly used in offshore wind construction and commissioning, long term operation and maintenance, offshore substation access and personnel transfer for far offshore wind farms. In 2025, the global mainstream system price was about US$2.0 million to US$5.0 million per unit. Large high end systems with fully electric drive, lifting tower, cargo transfer and 3D compensation functions could reach US$7.0 million to US$10.0 million per unit. The comprehensive average settlement price was about US$4.0 million to US$6.0 million per unit, and the industry average gross margin was about 25% to 35%.

Motion compensated gangways for offshore wind are best understood as high safety marine access equipment rather than ordinary vessel gangways. The upstream base includes steel structures, hydraulic systems, electric drive packages, motion sensors, control software, classification approval, safety components and marine grade automation modules. The midstream layer is formed by equipment manufacturers with offshore mechanical design, motion compensation algorithms, system integration, testing and project delivery capabilities. The downstream demand comes mainly from offshore wind construction, commissioning, service operation vessels, offshore substation access and long term wind farm operation and maintenance. As offshore wind projects move farther from shore and require longer operating campaigns, safe technician transfer, higher uptime and wider weather windows are becoming central purchasing criteria for vessel owners and wind farm operators.

The competitive structure is concentrated in Europe, while Asian supply is moving from project participation to localized manufacturing. Established suppliers have built barriers through offshore project experience, classification know how, motion control reliability and installed base support. Competition is no longer limited to the gangway structure itself. It is shifting toward integrated access packages that combine lifting towers, light cargo transfer, automatic landing, digital monitoring and lifecycle service. Recent capital restructuring and business separation among offshore equipment groups have also pushed product portfolios toward more focused offshore wind applications. At the product level, fully electric compensation, lighter structures, lower maintenance design and higher availability control systems are becoming important development directions.
