Despite advances in multi-core chip design, many business applications and database engines still fail to fully exploit that performance. Ingres hopes to change that for business intelligence (BI) at least. Developed in conjunction with a European research institute and Intel, Ingres’ VectorWise project aims to build high-performance storage and processing capabilities into its open source database to help companies scale up to high-end analytic database processing workloads, but at a low-end price using commodity hardware. In a lab setting, VectorWise points to a ten-fold increase in performance thanks to its clever hardware-conscious approach. But the real value of this project will only be realised through mainstream BI adoption and innovative applications that bridge the efficiency and cost gap that still exists today between database performance and specialised, high-end analytic processing.
