Shenzhen Telecom, as befits its location in one of China’s Special Economic Zones, offers a preview of what other branches of China Telecom are likely to experience in the near future. Although it lagged Hong Kong’s PCCW by a few years, it now similarly faces broadband saturation. In response, Shenzhen Telecom has upgraded its broadband offering and is using IPTV as an upsell incentive. But competition for TV customers from cable is stiff – and could easily spread to voice this year as Shenzhen is likely to be picked as a trial city for China’s convergence plan.
