The photovoltaic silicon waste recycling and processing market has shifted from the past model of ''scrap disposal'' to a new phase of ''silicon resource reallocation within the manufacturing segment''. Its core driving force lies not merely in environmental compliance requirements, but in persistent silicon loss generated by large-scale silicon wafer production and diamond wire slicing, alongside the photovoltaic industry chain?s demand for cost reduction, material loss mitigation and inventory resource utilization amid the downward price cycle.

Global PV silicon waste recycling and processing volume climbed from 141,800 metric tons in 2020 to 465,400 metric tons in 2025. Though the volume hit a cyclical peak in 2024, a decline was recorded in 2025. Meanwhile, recycling and processing prices plunged rapidly from the all-time high in 2022 to approximately over 800 US dollars per metric ton by 2025. This indicates the market does not grow linearly; instead, it is a cyclical resource recycling sector highly susceptible to fluctuations in polysilicon prices, silicon wafer operating rates, capacity utilization rates and waste grade purity.

In terms of supply structure, primary waste feedstocks currently originate from silicon wafer manufacturers and integrated PV producers including TCL Zhonghuan, JinkoSolar, LONGi, JA Solar, Gaojing Solar, Trina Solar, Shuangliang Eco-Energy, Meike Solar and Gaoce Technology. The competitive landscape of PV silicon waste recycling and processing must be analyzed by four segmented participants: waste generators, in-house recycling operators, outsourced recycling processors and end material consumers.

High-purity waste streams from leading manufacturers, such as silicon ingot top/bottom ends, edge trim scraps and crushed silicon chunks, feature high value for closed-loop internal recycling. After sorting, cleaning, crushing and impurity removal, these materials can be reintroduced into the monocrystalline ingot pulling or multicrystalline ingot casting production lines. From the demand side, there are three primary high-value utilization routes for silicon waste from PV manufacturing:

1. Reprocessing into photovoltaic-grade recycled polysilicon or furnace feedstock ? the optimal value chain for high-purity bulk silicon scraps.

2. Conversion into silicon-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Processed slicing silicon powder and kerf waste represent a low-cost silicon raw material alternative. Industrial research has verified that refined silicon kerf waste can substitute nano-silicon in lithium battery anodes, yet its large-scale application is restricted by limitations in particle size uniformity, cyclic volume expansion, initial coulombic efficiency and impurity control.

3. Downcycling into silicon alloys, ceramics, refractory materials, microsilica fume and silica fillers, which absorbs low-grade waste unsuitable for closed-loop PV manufacturing reuse.

Over the next several years, the core contradiction of this market will evolve from ''whether waste feedstock is available for recycling'' to ''which waste fractions can achieve high-value utilization via economically viable processes''. China holds highly concentrated PV manufacturing capacity, and has long maintained a dominant global market share across all core solar panel production links ? laying a solid industrial foundation for China to build large-scale silicon waste recycling infrastructure. Nevertheless, PV manufacturers have suffered widening operating losses since 2025 amid fierce price competition and chronic overcapacity.
