Tehran is a major economic powerhouse of Iran, producing 24% of the country's GDP as of 2012. Tehran's industrial make-up is much more diversified than that of the rest of the country, with important categories in the city including business services (34% of local GDP in 2012), commerce (29%) and manufacturing (15%). However, crippling sanctions imposed on Iran have taken a toll on Tehran's people: over 2007-2012, average real household incomes declined by a total of 15%.
