Handicraft manufacturing industry is a labor-intensive industry and is the traditional light industry of China. China’s handicraft manufacturing industry has a huge scope. According to statistic data provided by China National Light Industry Association, the handicraft manufacturing industry has almost 10 thousand enterprises currently. From January to November in 2007, China’s handicraft manufacturing industry had 4,066 enterprises above the designated size, with sales income of 144.837 billion Yuan, up by about 27.26% over the same period of the previous year, and with total profit of 6.729 billion Yuan, up by 31.28% over the same period of the previous year.

In terms of economic type of enterprises, private enterprises and enterprises invested with foreign capital are dominant in China’s handicraft manufacturing industry. In 2007, the industry had 2,090 private enterprises, accounting for 51.40% of total enterprise amount, and 1,356 enterprises invested by foreign capital, accounting for 33.35% of total enterprise amount. The number of enterprises in the above-mentioned two types occupied 84.75% of total number of enterprises above the designated size of the industry in the country.

Currently, both the import and export of China’s handicraft show rapid increase. In 2007, the import value of China’s handicraft reached 199 million USD, up by 34.17% over the previous year, and the export value reached 9.827 billion USD, up by 13.44% over the previous year. According to the latest statistic data revealed by China Customs, in 2008, the import of handicraft of China had a stable rise. From January to September, China imported 181 million USD of handicraft, up by 29.44% over the same period of last year. Although rising in production cost and decreasing in foreign demand gave a certain stress to China handicraft manufacturing industry, the export of China’s handicraft has continued increasing trend of the past five years. From January to September, China exported 8.068 billion USD of handicraft, up by 10.57% than the same period in last year.

China’s economic increase mode has changed from dominance of foreign capital to enlargement of domestic demand. Facing the worsened international economic situation, Chinese government will continuously formulate economic policies to guarantee the stable and rapid increase of domestic economy. As general daily consumable, handicraft will face certain pressure in a short period due to decrease in consumption demand. Therefore, it can be forecasted that under the condition without great fluctuation in domestic and foreign economy, the annual increase in market demand of handicraft in China will be kept around 10%-13%, and the market capability in 2-3 years will be kept between?168.8 billion Yuan to ?183 billion Yuan.
