Diode-pumped disk lasers are solid-state lasers that use semiconductor laser diodes as the pump source and a thin disk-shaped solid gain medium as the laser working medium. The gain medium is typically a crystal such as ytterbium-doped Yb:YAG, formed into a very thin disk and mounted on an efficient heat dissipation structure. The pump light is coupled into the disk through multiple reflections or a multi-pass pumping configuration, while the laser output is emitted in a direction approximately perpendicular to the disk surface. RP Photonics defines a thin-disk laser as a specific type of diode-pumped solid-state laser in which the gain medium is a very thin disk, typically about 100?200 ?m thick, mounted on a heat sink. This ?active mirror? structure helps dissipate heat along the optical axis, thereby reducing thermal gradients and thermal lensing problems.

From the perspective of the industry?s fundamental nature, diode-pumped disk lasers are a high-performance technology route within high-power solid-state lasers. Their core value lies in using a thin-disk gain medium and an efficient heat dissipation structure to address the thermal lensing, thermal distortion, and beam quality degradation that traditional rod-type solid-state lasers tend to experience at high power levels.
