The process involves sorting, inspection, degreasing and cleaning, crushing, briquetting, separation, chemical composition verification, and either smelting for regeneration or powder processing, ultimately enabling the material to be reused as titanium ingots, bars, plates, alloy ingots, powders, or alloying additives. Materials subject to this recycling process include titanium chips, turnings, offcuts, sheet trimmings, bar remnants, forging scrap, residual 3D printing titanium powder, aerospace closed-loop scrap, medical implant processing waste, and decommissioned titanium components from chemical equipment. Compared to general scrap metal recycling, titanium scrap recycling entails stricter requirements regarding alloy grades, oxygen/nitrogen/hydrogen content, contamination control, traceability, and aerospace-grade certification.

Aerospace-grade closed-loop recycling is becoming a key focus in the high-end market. Aerospace companies and titanium producers increasingly prefer remelting scrap?such as Ti-6Al-4V?of the same grade and origin with low contamination levels into aerospace-grade feedstock; this approach reduces reliance on titanium sponge, shortens supply chains, and lowers carbon emissions. The European EcoTitanium project serves as a prime example, aiming to transform titanium scrap into new aerospace-grade ingots using advanced melting technologies, thereby enhancing local titanium supply capabilities.

Additive manufacturing is giving rise to new forms of recycling. Processes such as titanium powder bed fusion, electron beam melting, and 3D printing of medical implants generate unmelted powder, oversize powder, and contaminated powder, all of which require strict control over particle size distribution, oxygen content, and recycling cycles. In the future, the recovery of waste titanium powder, regeneration via plasma spheroidization, and closed-loop powder management will emerge as high-value-added niche sectors.
