Diode-pumped disk lasers are solid-state lasers that use semiconductor laser diodes as the pump source and a thin disk-shaped solid gain medium as the laser working medium. The gain medium is typically a crystal such as ytterbium-doped Yb:YAG, formed into a very thin disk and mounted on an efficient heat dissipation structure. The pump light is coupled into the disk through multiple reflections or a multi-pass pumping configuration, while the laser output is emitted in a direction approximately perpendicular to the disk surface. By shortening the heat conduction path, reducing thermal lensing effects, and improving beam quality, this structure enables high power, high efficiency, high beam quality, and good power scalability. It is mainly used in metal cutting, welding, brazing, surface treatment, additive manufacturing, microprocessing, precision manufacturing, automotive manufacturing, aerospace, electronics manufacturing, and scientific research.

RP Photonics defines a thin-disk laser as a specific type of diode-pumped solid-state laser in which the gain medium is a very thin disk, typically about 100?200 ?m thick, mounted on a heat sink. This ?active mirror? structure helps dissipate heat along the optical axis, thereby reducing thermal gradients and thermal lensing problems.

From the perspective of the industry?s fundamental nature, diode-pumped disk lasers are a high-performance technology route within high-power solid-state lasers. Their core value lies in using a thin-disk gain medium and an efficient heat dissipation structure to address the thermal lensing, thermal distortion, and beam quality degradation that traditional rod-type solid-state lasers tend to experience at high power levels. Compared with conventional DPSS lasers, the disk structure is more suitable for power scaling. Compared with fiber lasers, disk lasers still offer unique advantages in applications requiring high beam quality, high pulse energy, specific wavelength conversion, and ultrafast amplification. Therefore, they are not the most widely adopted laser type, but they have clear technical value in high-end industrial processing and scientific laser systems. From the perspective of demand structure, industrial processing is the most important application area for diode-pumped disk lasers, especially in metal welding, brazing, cutting, surface treatment, cladding, and additive manufacturing. Automotive manufacturing is one of the key demand sources, as body welding, powertrain processing, battery structural component joining, and high-strength steel processing all require high-power and high-stability laser sources. Aerospace, precision machinery, and electronics manufacturing place greater emphasis on beam quality, processing stability, and material compatibility. Although the market size of scientific research and ultrafast laser applications is smaller than that of industrial processing, they require higher technical performance and have higher unit value, particularly in picosecond / femtosecond amplification, nonlinear frequency conversion, and high-average-power ultrafast laser systems. From the perspective of technology routes, continuous-wave thin-disk lasers mainly serve high-power industrial processing applications, emphasizing output power, beam quality, efficiency, and long-term stability. Pulsed thin-disk lasers and ultrafast thin-disk lasers are more commonly used in microprocessing, precision processing, and scientific research applications, emphasizing peak power, pulse energy, repetition rate, and thermal stability. Yb:YAG is one of the most typical gain media used in thin-disk lasers, as it is well suited for high-efficiency diode pumping and high-power output. Future product upgrades will focus on higher average power, higher electro-optical efficiency, better beam quality, more stable thermal management, multi-wavelength output, ultrafast pulse amplification, and integration with automated processing systems. From the perspective of the competitive landscape, the diode-pumped disk laser market is relatively concentrated.
