Marten Transport, Ltd. operates as a temperature-sensitive truckload carrier company in the United States. The company focuses on transporting and distributing food and other consumer packaged goods that require a temperature-controlled or insulated environment.

The company operates throughout the United States and in parts of Canada and Mexico. Its primary long-haul traffic lanes are between the Midwest and the West Coast, Southwest, Southeast, and the East Coast, as well as from California to the Pacific Northwest. The company provides regional truckload carrier services in the Southeast, West Coast, Midwest and South Central regions. In 2009, its average length of haul was 761 miles.

The company offers service levels that include approximately 99% on-time performance and delivery within the narrow time windows often required when shipping perishable commodities.


The company has two segments, Truckload and Logistics.

The company also has loading and unloading activities, equipment detention and other ancillary services. Logistics segment consists of internal brokerage and intermodal operations. It has a 45% interest in MW Logistics, LLC, or MWL, a third-party provider of logistics services to the transportation industry. Brokerage services involve arranging for another company to transport freight for its customers while the company retains the billing, collection and customer management responsibilities. Intermodal services involve the transport of its trailers on railroad flatcars for a portion of a trip, with the balance of the trip using its tractors or, to a lesser extent, contracted carriers.

Revenue Equipment

The company operates newer, well-maintained equipment with uniform specifications to minimize its spare parts inventory, and streamline its maintenance program. As of December 31, 2009, the company operated a fleet of 2,264 tractors, including 2,087 company-owned tractors and 177 tractors supplied by independent contractors. As of December 31, 2009, the company operated a fleet of 3,958 trailers. Most of its trailers are equipped with Thermo-King refrigeration units, air ride suspensions, and anti-lock brakes. Most of its single van trailers are refrigerated, 53 feet long, and 102 inches wide.


The company’s major customers are General Mills and Kraft.
