Traditional fuel energy is being reduced day by day; the harm it caused to the environment has become increasingly prominent; the world's 20 billion people do not have normal energy supply. At such a point, the whole world are casting their eyes on the renewable sources of energy, hoping that they can change the energy structure for human being so as to maintain long-term sustainable development. Among all the renewable energies, solar energy becomes the focus of attention for its unique advantages. Abundant solar radiation is an important source of energy, which is inexhaustible, pollution-free, cheap, and freely available to human being. The amount of solar energy reaching the ground is up to 800,000 kilowatts per second. If 0.1 percent of solar energy on the Earth's surface was converted into electric energy at the rate of 5 percent, there will be an annual output of power generation of about 5.6 × 1012 kilowatt-hour, which is equivalent to 40 times the world's energy consumption.

Compared with the international boom of photovoltaic power generation, China lags behind developed countries by 10-15 years and even obviously lags behind India. However, the Chinese PV industry is growing at a rate of 30 percent per year. In 2005 China's total solar cell production reached 139MW, a179 percent leap over 2004; in 2006 it reached 400MW and in 2007 continued to increase to 900MW, surpassing the United States to become the world's third-largest producer with an alarming production capacity up to 1,280MW.

But in the next ten years, the solar cell market may see a substantial change. Until 2010, most solar cells in China are used in independent photovoltaic power generation systems. However, from 2011 to 2020, the mainstream market of China's photovoltaic power generation will be shifted to grid systems, including desert power plants and urban roof power generation systems. Under the support of project building of various ministries, at present, solar cells in China’s laboratories have reached an efficiency rate of 21 percent, commercial photovoltaic components 14-15%, and general commercial solar cells 10-13%. China's current production cost of solar photovoltaic cells has fallen significantly and the price of solar cells dropped gradually from 40 yuan / watt in 2000 to 33 yuan / kilowat in 2003, and 23 yuan / watt in 2007. This played a decisive role in the growth and maturing of the domestic solar product market and is of great significance for the domestic market to be in line with international norms.
