Review & Analysis on Indian Solar Energy Sector

Power deficit nation with peak deficit of ~10%
  • Even as India records GDP growth rates of 7-8% p.a., much of the country remains energy starved.
  • The reported power deficit country was total deficit of 7.5% and a peak deficit of 10.3% in 2010-11.
  • 1 out of 6 Indian villages still do not have access to electricity; 44% of the overall households (about 56% of the rural households) have no access to electricity.
  • Though, it is the fifth largest consumer of energy in the world, per capita consumption of electricity currently stands at ~700 kWh, much lower than the global average of ~2,500kWh. It is projected to become 3rd largest consumer of energy in the world by 2030.
  • With the economy growing at an average of 8% annually, demand for power is likely to soar from around 120,000MW at present to 315,000-355,000MW by 2017.
