Fipronil Technology in China
Fipronil is an outstanding insecticide and has played an important role in pest control in China. However, owing to the harmful effect of fipronil on shellfishes and bees, Chinese government has restricted the use of fipronil in China since 1 October 2009, which totally changes the structure of the fipronil market. Though domestic market is impacted seriously, many active fipronil manufacturers still produce fipronil for exportation and the animal health segment.
Fipronil is a broad spectrum insecticide that disrupts insects’ central nervous system. It was discovered and developed by Rhône-Poulenc between 1985 and 1987, and placed on the market in 1993 in the US. The research of fipronil technology has been developing in China for over a decade and the production technology of fipronil and its intermediate gained some breakthroughs during this period. Different production technologies are applied by domestic producers and Bayer CropScience now.
