A radial fixed bed reactor is a fixed bed reactor in which fluid flows radially (centrifugally or centripetally) through a static catalyst bed. The catalyst is typically packed in an annulus formed by concentric inner and outer cylinders. It features a short flow path, large flow cross-sectional area, and significantly lower pressure drop than axial beds. However, its structure is more complex, requiring solutions for uniform distribution and thermal expansion.
The shell is constructed of 1.25Cr-0.5Mo, 2.25Cr-1Mo, or 304/316 stainless steel thick plates to withstand 20–30 MPa ammonia synthesis or 600 ? dehydrogenation conditions. Internal components include concentric cylindrical porous gas distribution-collection screens (stainless steel wire mesh or perforated plates), alloy sealing rings, and a refractory fiber insulation layer. In terms of cost, thick-walled high-pressure cylinders and large flange forgings account for 55%–65% of the total equipment cost; porous internals and precision assembly time account for 15%–20%; initial catalyst loading (molecular sieve or precious metal platinum-tin system) accounts for 10%–25%; and the remainder is for inter-stage heat exchangers, quench piping, instrumentation, and on-site insulation. Due to diameters reaching 4 meters and single-unit catalyst loading capacities in the hundreds of tons, the manufacturing cycle is long, and welding and heat treatment costs are high, making it one of the most expensive single-unit equipment in large-tonnage petrochemical plants.
