An axial fixed-bed reactor is a fixed-bed reactor in which fluid flows from top to bottom (or bottom to top) along the reactor axis through a stationary catalyst bed. It has the simplest structure, consisting of an inlet distributor, a catalyst bed, and an outlet collector. It is the earliest and most widely used type of gas-solid catalytic reactor in industry.
The shell is typically made of 20g, 16MnR, or 304/316 stainless steel thick plates, lined with refractory bricks/ceramic fiber for insulation. The catalyst, depending on the process formulation, contains active components such as Co-Mo, Ni-W, Pt-Sn, and Pd/zeolite, and is supported on Al?O? or molecular sieve supports. In terms of cost, thick-walled carbon steel or stainless steel cylinders and flange forgings account for 55%–65% of the total equipment cost, initial catalyst loading accounts for 15%–30% (higher for precious metal systems), and the remainder is for distribution plates, inert packing, supports, instrumentation valves, and on-site insulation installation. Due to its simple structure and lack of complex internal components, the unit cost of an axially adiabatic bed reactor is usually lower than that of a radial or tubular reactor of the same scale, but the interstage heat exchangers and pipelines in multiple series stages will increase the total investment.
