Executive Summary

One of the most important raw materials in the petrochemical industry, the use of ethylene involves the production of polyethylene plastics like high density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and low density polyethylene (LDPE). There are three ways used for the production of ethylene. The first is by the steam cracking of naphtha, other by steam cracking of ethane and yet another by the catalytic cracking of gas oil. The production by ethane is common in North America whereas production by naphtha is common in Middle East regions.

The ethylene industry is growing exponentially because of various factors facilitating its growth. Ethylene is used for the manufacture of various plastics and polymers like PVC and polyethylene and their increasing demand is responsible for the increased demand of this petrochemical. These plastics are widely used in various day to day products used by humans. Moreover, the increasing per-capita income leading to increased disposable income is also one of the reasons for the increased demand for ethylene. The industry also faces various challenges like the oil price fluctuations as oil is one of the most important raw materials for the production of these petrochemicals. Moreover, this industry’s products including PVC and polyethylene are considered to be a threat to the human health and to the environment also. The increased awareness for health and environment can be a challenge for the industry if the products are not modified accordingly.
