Acetic acid, also known as ethanoic acid, is a clear and colorless liquid with a very pungent odour. It also represents one of the simplest carboxylic acids and has the chemical formula CH?COOH. Acetic acid occurs both free and combined in the form of esters of various alcohols in many plants and has also been detected in animal secretions. It is currently produced both synthetically and by bacterial fermentation. Today, the biological route accounts for only a small share of the total world production. It, however, remains important for vinegar production. Among the synthetic routes, the methanol carbonylation process represents the most common method for acetic acid production. This involves the reaction of methanol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst to produce acetic acid.

Acetic acid is considered one of the most important industrial organic acids with various applications in the chemical industry. One of its largest and fastest growing end-use sector is vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) - with major applications in emulsion paints, adhesives and coating sectors. The second largest end-use market for acetic acid is as a solvent for manufacturing of PTA (purified terephthalic acid) - which is mainly used in the production of polyester resins for fibre, packaging and film applications, particularly for water and soft drinks bottles. Acetic acid is also used in the production of acetic anhydride, which is used for the conversion of cellulose into cellulose acetate. Other major applications of acetic acid include butyl acetate and ethyl acetate which are mainly used in glues, nail polish removers, decaffeinating tea and coffee, and cigarettes.

IMARC’s new TMMR “Acetic Acid Market Report: Volume, Value, Prices, Applications, Manufacturers, Regional Breakup, Manufacturing Process, Raw Materials, Mass Balance” provides a technical, analytical and statistical insight into the acetic acid market. The market analysis includes volume trends, value trends, price trends, key players, market breakup by region, market breakup by end-use industries, key success factors, key risk factors, feedstock market trends, import trends, export trends, etc. Apart from the market analysis, the report also provides an exhaustive technical insight on acetic acid. This includes chemical information, manufacturing process, chemical reactions involved, raw material requirements, mass balance, conversion rate of feedstocks, etc.

The study, which is based both on desk research and multiple waves of qualitative primary research, is a must-read for entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, consultants, business strategists, and all those who are planning to foray into the acetic acid industry in any manner.
