Their primary role is not to serve as final structural materials but to act as additives during the aluminum alloy melting process; small additions achieve functions such as grain refinement, modification, performance strengthening, and improved processing characteristics. These alloys typically consist of an aluminum matrix and high concentrations of functional elements. Common products include aluminum-titanium-boron (Al-Ti-B) and aluminum-titanium-carbon (Al-Ti-C) grain refiners, aluminum-strontium (Al-Sr) modifiers, as well as aluminum-boron (Al-B), aluminum-scandium (Al-Sc), aluminum-zirconium (Al-Zr), and aluminum-rare earth master alloys. Compared to the direct addition of pure metal elements, master alloys offer advantages such as uniform element distribution, melting points close to that of molten aluminum, rapid dissolution rates, and high addition efficiency, thereby reducing compositional segregation and oxidative loss during the alloy preparation process.
