Specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for crops is a scientific method to control and prevent pests and diseases at the same plant growth period, with the same pesticide dosages and by professional organizations.

Since 2008, the China’s Ministry of Agriculture has been promoting specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for crops nationwide. This will help to improve the utilisation rate of pesticides and then pesticide consumption can be reduced, which is important for food safety and environmental protection. Over 2011-2015, coverage of specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for staple grains (such as wheat, rice and corn) increased from 15% to 33%.

Among all the provinces in China, Hunan Province performed particularly well in the specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for crops, which can be mainly attributed to governmental promotion.

“Specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for crops is actually a hosting service provided for farmers by professional agricultural means of production companies during the whole growth period of rice,” stated Xiao Yongsheng, head of the Plant Protection Station of Agricultural Bureau, Changsha Town, Hunan.

The specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for crops can help farmers to overcome difficulties in controlling pests and diseases. In the meanwhile, farmers have no need to worry about chemical injuries due to their misuse of pesticides any more. In addition, the specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for crops can also help farmers to save costs and improve crop yields.

In the past few years, in the areas of specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases in Hunan, consumption of pesticides decreased by around 20% and there were no poisoning accidents. Pesticides efficacy was improved as well. Currently, both yields of early rice and late rice were improved by over 1,500 kg/ha. The pollution by wasted packages of pesticides mitigated.

In Hunan, there were more than 10,000 pesticide retailers that exited the market due to the entry of organizations for specialised control and prevention of pests and diseases for crops. The organizations directly purchase pesticides from manufacturers instead of retailers or dealers. That’s to say, the traditional sales system of pesticides has been changed.
