Demand for most resins fell by 20-24% on average, in Q4-08, while the market for polystyrene fell by 9% as per MarketPublishers.com. On a regional basis, the largest demand declines were seen in Western Europe, particularly the UK and Spain. Global demand for polystyrene (PS) is forecast to increase at about 2% pa through 2011. Growth will be driven by China's strong demand, which is expected to expand by 5.9%. North American demand will slide by 0.5% pa, while PS demand in Western Europe will fall 0.1% pa by 2011. The outlook for the US market remains negative, except for the food service packaging segment. Continued erosion of margins will lead to recommendations for price hikes. Total demand is anticipated to decrease by 0.5% pa through 2011.
