HIV/AIDS Remain One of Top Global Public Health Concerns

02 Feb 2018 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – Today, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) remains the major cause of death globally and continues to be the one of the top global public health issues. During 2001-2016, the total number of newly diagnosed cases of HIV infection have been on the decline: from around 3 million new cases in 2011 to less than 2 million new cases in 2016.

The major share of all newly diagnosed cases of HIV infection is accounted for emerging countries, especially low- and middle-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many of people suffering from HIV/AIDS in such countries have no access to drugs or other treatment options, that can make their living with the infection more manageable. Children are also amenable to this infection, they usually get it from HIV-positive mothers during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. Globally, there are approximately 1.8 million children living with HIV.

The world’s HIV/AIDS diagnostics market is predicted to continue gaining traction in the years ahead, fueled by rising prevalence, favourable initiatives taken by both government and non-governmental organisations, increase R&D, clinical trials for HIV vaccines, technological advancements, introduction of new products in HIV/AIDS treatment and diagnostics, amidst other factors.

At present, the HIV/AIDS diagnostics market is mainly presented by HIV-2 & Group O diagnostic tests, antibody tests, CD4 testing, viral load tests, viral identification testing and early infant diagnostics. Antibody test are set to maintain the leading position in the market in the foreseeable future.

As for the present HIV/AIDS diagnostics market scenario, the North American region, followed by Europe, takes lead in the global marketplace, majorly owing to rising incidence of HIV, robust technological progress in the field of AIDS diagnostics and treatment, enhancing awareness of the disease and also favourable initiatives and programs adopted by the government. Meantime APAC is the most rapidly-expanding regional market for HIV/AIDS diagnostics, it is set to maintain the highest growth rates in the coming years, fueled by rapidly rising HIV population number, increasing awareness about his infection and blood transfusion risks, remarkable improvements in healthcare infrastructure in the emerging countries.
