China LNG Production Increased by 1.7% YoY in 2016, States CRI in Its Topical Research Report Available at MarketPublishers.com

18 Jul 2017 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – China’s LNG production volume stood at close to 136.9 billion cubic meters as of 2016, indicating a 1.7% increase YoY. The country’s conventional natural gas deposits and output volume are not in abundance which cannot satisfy the soaring demands. Owing to the restricted growth prospects of the production volume of domestic natural gas, it is necessary to import natural gas. China’s reliance upon imported gas and petroleum continues to gather momentum. As of 2016, China's LNG import volume increased by 32.97% YoY, reaching 26.15 million tonnes.

Coals keep on be replaced by LNG and natural gas, fuelled by the development of Chinese economy and industry, urbanisation boom and stiffer environmental policies in the country. In the foreseeable future, the demand for natural gas and LNG is poised to keep on gathering speed. To this day, there are still over 50% of families utilising firewood and coals as their key fuels in China, hence, natural gas and LNG have a great market potential. Owing to restricted growth potential of production volume of local natural gas, LNG import volume is poised to be gaining traction through to 2021.
