LONDON – China’s booming PVC industry exerts an increasing influence on that of the world. In the last few years, China has become the leading polyvinyl chloride (PVC) manufacturer and consumer globally, with the industry output volume reaching 16.1 million tonnes with a slight YoY decline in China as of 2015.
Meantime, the aggregate consumption of two major PVC consumption areas including tubing and pipes alongside profiles, windows and doors captured over 50% of the total. The tubing industry saw fast-paced development whilst the proportion of PVC tubing witnessed a decline. The downstream demand decreased in line with the real estate development area, resulting to a decrease in the output volume of the profile industry.
Recent years have seen the expansion of the development and distribution of PVC producers to the areas concentrated with raw materials, with the manufacturing capacity transferring from high-cost eastern regions to western and central regions with lower costs. The PVC production capacity expanded rapidly from 2003 and experienced gradual saturation from 2005 due to increasingly mature manufacturing processes and municipal government support, exceeding 25 million tonnes in China by 2014-end.
The Chinese PVC industry is gradually turning from being original pure importer to net exporter. By 2006-end, China became the world’s top maker of PVC outpacing the USA with respect to the manufacturing capacity and output volume. In the recent past, the overall export volume of PVC witnessed a steady hike in the country.
