Mobile Solutions Dominate Latin America Telecom Marketspace, States BuddeComm in Its New Report Published at MarketPublishers.com

LONDON – Latin America’s telephony services continue to increasingly turn towards mobile solutions, somewhat of a legacy response to inadequate fixed-line infrastructure and the ongoing focus on investment into mobile networks rather than fixed-line data networks. Consequently, many people in the countryside have become mobile subscribers by default, being deprived of an option for fixed-line voice and data services. Also, natural factors such as mountainous areas and hurricanes and earthquakes have been partly responsible for the widespread acceptance of wireless services, as these can be the cause damage to fixed-line networks at regular times. Additionally, many people who live in remote locations consider the installation of cables to serve them uneconomical.

Around 80% of Latin America’s mobile subscribers are currently on lower-cost prepaid service plans. Prepaid services played a significant part in the evolution of the sector, as they brought mobile phones within the reach of millions of low-income individuals who had been left out by the contractual requirements of credit checks and monthly payments.

Being inhabited by a number of smaller players, the region’s mobile marketplace keeps on being led by the top 3 operators: Telefónica, América Móvil and Telecom Italia. Other leading players comprise Digicel Group and Millicom International.

The dominance of these players has been eroded over time owing to efforts by a set of national regulatory agencies to facilitate the process of entry of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) and to invigorate the participation of smaller operators in spectrum auctions. Mexican telecom corporation América Móvil is obliged to decrease its market share from 68% in 2016 to just under 50% by 2018-end.

New comprehensive research report “Latin America - Mobile Voice and Mobile Broadband Statistics (tables only)” elaborated by BuddeComm provides a detailed assessment of the Latin American telecom marketplace. The study presents comprehensive market analyses for the leading countries in the region, covering mobile versus fixed statistics, mobile subscribers and the degree of penetration, mobile technologies, prepaid ratios, mobile average revenue per user (ARPU), mobile broadband, leading mobile operators and key operator statistics, and more.
