Chinese Laptop Industry Analysed by ASKCI Consulting in Topical Research Report Available at MarketPublishers.com

14 Mar 2016 • by Natalie Aster

LONDON – China has evolved into a computer manufacturing base for the world, driven by a surge in demand for computers from both domestic and global markets. The country is also the world’s biggest consumer of computer products.

The country’s laptop output stood at 244 million as of 2011, with a large proportion (230 million) of units being exported to global markets. The importance of laptop computers have surged to a great degree in China in the recent past, accounting for nearly half of the computer industry revenues as of 2015.

There are a number of global computer makers in China, like IBM, HP, Dell and Sony. Revenues from desktop PC sales in the country are poised to keep on declining in the coming years, mainly owing to the surging popularity of laptop computers.

Traditional laptop manufacturing bases are situated in Kunshan and Shanghai. The laptop production shifted to the western part of China on the back of the soaring labour costs in the Yangzi Delta region. For managing staff and production personnel, the wages increased year after year, which made laptop original design manufacturers (ODMs) with the gross income of around 4% be overwhelmed.

Western China is characterised by lower labour costs but higher costs of logistics. Additionally, the western labour costs are gaining rapid momentum. Hence, Chongqing is the 2nd base at most, coming second only to the Yangtze Delta region. The laptop supporting industrial chain in the region is the most suitable, with the logistics costs being lowest; hence, the region will likely remain the key production base in the years to come.
