LONDON – At present, JD is the world's top 5 e-commerce company, the largest self-operated e-commerce platform in China, and the country’s 4th largest Internet company in parallel with Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent (collectively referred to as BAT). Apart from its key e-commerce business, since 2013, JD has aggressively developed online banking services. In 2014, the company expanded its business to smart services by becoming engaged in the development of smart devices, in an attempt to create an open ecosystem for smart services.
JD has enjoyed huge growth in terms of gross merchandise volume (GMV), net revenue, and active customers. The firm’s active customers witnessed 103.8% YoY growth with GMV rising 107.3% to USD 260 billion as of 2014; while its net revenue grew 65.8%.
Despite a net loss, JD has shown bright growth potential which is higher than the Chinese e-commerce industry's average; China’s e-commerce witnessed around 59.5% YoY growth in 2014. The distinguished performance has made JD a component of the NASDAQ-100 Index in summer 2015.
