LONDON – The global construction industry has recovered its growth trajectory; its annual average growth rate (AAGR), which was 2.7% in real terms during 2011–2013, rose to 3.1% in 2014. Forecasts suggest there will be a further growth to 3.8% by 2015, and then an average annual hike of 3.9% during 2016–2020. Globally, the construction industry is forecast to reach a value of USD 8.5 trillion in 2015 and rise to USD 10.3 trillion by 2020-end.
The construction sectors in emerging markets will likely to keep on expanding at a far faster pace than in the developed economies. The emerging construction markets captured over 50% of the globe’s output for the first time in 2012, with their share set to increase to 56% by 2020-end. Starting from 2016 and till 2020, the developed economies’ construction industries are forecast to expand at an average rate of 2.2% annually, whilst emerging markets are poised to post a 5.3% annual growth over the very same period. The construction industries in the Middle East region and Africa will likely register the fastest growth through to 2020, outstripping the APAC region whose share of the total construction industry, however, is poised for continuous growth, reaching nearly 49% by 2020.
