Flexible Solar Cell Market To Reach 1.6 GW in Production in 2020, Forecasts SNE Research

15 May 2013 • by Natalie Aster

The growth of the flexible solar cell market had driven by the a-Si solar cell market until 2009, where United Solar Ovonic (USA) took the lead, and boosted with participation of new CIGS and other flexible solar cell manufacturers since 2010.

With the global economic recession and excess supply of solar cells, the flexible solar cell market showed a rapid decrease in production, but turned to an upward trend in 2013. According to the report “Next-Generation Flexible Thin-film Solar Cell Technology and Market Forecast (2009~2020)” by SNE Research, it is expected to recover to the average level from 2014, and grow rapidly, reaching 1.6 GW in production in 2020.

Although Uni Solar had dominated the flexible solar cell market, accounting for more than 90% with its a-Si solar cells until 2008, there has been a sharp downward trend with the rapid growth of the flexible CiGS solar cell market since 2010.

Since Uni Solar stopped production since 2012, the a-Si market is expected to occupy below 10%. On the other hand, the CICS solar cell market recorded a rapid increase in production as many manufacturers entered the commercialization stage, and is expected to lead the flexible solar cell market in the future. OPVs, which are being studied for commercialization, are expected to grow drastically from 4% in 2012 to 48% in 2020.
